Soda Machines and Real Genius

In the movie Real Genius, Val Kilmer's character uses a cheese cutter to chop up plastic slugs that he uses in place of quarters to get soda and candy from vending machines. I always thought it was a great idea and hoped to put it into action one day. Then when I moved to Minnesota, I walked to our basement laundry area with a pocketful of quarters and found that someone had popped the top off the coin-operated part of the machine. I had to go upstairs to get help, and I found out that my actual genius roommate had broken the washing machine apart and figured out what knob you needed to turn inside the mechanism to wash your clothes for free. Not only did we save a lot of money and walk around with clean clothes, but I finally graduated to life beyond the 1985 film Real Genius.
