My Roman Countrymen

I thought I had learned Roman numerals when I was in about fourth grade. It's pretty simple. You remember what X, V, and I mean, and then it's a matter of adding or subtracting based on the order in which they're placed. Then I saw something that was trying to indicate a year using an L. I'm unfamiliar with the L. Maybe it means 50? Regardless, there's no excuse for any endeavor using Roman numerals these days. Perhaps some marketers feel that it adds gravity and a sense of drama to their event, but I graduated from the 4th grade class on Roman numerals. I'm no fool, and I have no idea what their "L" means. It's time to retire these digits for good.
