Smell vs Taste

My girlfriend asked, "Is this asparagus still okay?" I asked, "Did you smell it?" She said, "no" which means, "I want you to smell it." If you ever wonder if something is okay to smell, it's probably not going to be okay to eat. But I smelled it. And then smelled it again. It smelled exactly like butterscotch, the amazing candy that smells like a combination of great liquor and melted butter. I thought, maybe I've made the discovery of a lifetime, maybe rotten asparagus tastes like candy. But we'll never know because I also decided not to go through with the taste test.
