Facebook Friend Surprise

I met my friend and her older brother out for dinner one night, and we were sitting at a bar waiting for our table to be ready. I'd never met her brother before, but I'd met several members of his family when they'd come to visit my friend. One of them was this guy's son, my friend's nephew. We'd hung out at family holidays over the Fourth of July and he'd asked me about my work. He sent a Facebook friend request ages ago and I never really thought about it again, though I'd see what he was up to in high school from time to time. During my conversation at the bar, her brother mentioned something to me about his son. I said, "Oh, Andrew? Yeah, we're Facebook friends." I didn't think about it at the time, but what an odd and potentially unsettling thing to hear as a parent. I guess later his son said to him, "Dad, I can't believe you were hanging out with all my friends and I wasn't there."
