Alligator Guide

I went on a bayou tour last week in a state that has no laws against throwing raw hotdogs to alligators. Our guide would try to get alligators and other wildlife to approach our boat by tapping on the side of it with a stick and then patting the water with his hand. I didn't understand why he couldn't also use the stick for tapping the water. This, I thought, would not end well. So when one of my friends asked him, "How long have you been doing this," and he answered, "Couple months," I guessed he was exaggerating his experience. Also, I guess that next time I see him he'll be less one hand.
