I walked into a clothing store with my headphones in and a young, friendly clerk asked me, "What are you listening to?" I stood staring at her for a moment, my head utterly blank. Then I said, "Bob Dylan." I don't even think that's what I was listening to, but for some reason I was embarrassed about my music choice. Then she said something back to me with a smile and a shrug, the lilt rising at the end of her sentence indicating that it was a question, but I still had my headphones in. You see, I didn't know that I should take them out for a follow up question. And I didn't catch it, so I just kind of nodded and said, "Yeah, Dylan's awesome," because regardless of what she asked, I know it to be true.
