It Was the 1980s
It is unclear to me how the 1980s and neon clothing have become linked in so many minds. Watch any 80s movie -- Ghostbusters, the Goonies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off -- and you won't see any neon. Neon was, perhaps, an ill-advised fashion trend perpetrated by Ocean Pacific and similar clothing brands for a few months in the very early 90s, but this is one embarrassing part of our collective pop-culture that we cannot continue to lay on the decade of Wham!, Def Leppard, and The Smiths. In fact, the next time you see a guy wearing a denim shirt and khaki pants, compliment him on his 80s outfit.
