Modern Etiquette Issues
I was getting a sandwich made at the sandwich bar and a man in a workout outfit who'd selected a pre-made sandwich from the cooler held it up at the cash register and shouted to the only employee (who was helping me), "How much does this cost?" Then he got out a $20 and laid it on the counter. My guy had to stop making my sandwich and ring him up. It was one of those situations where you can never think of the right thing to say until a few hours later. Next time it happens, here's my move: I ask the guy, "Have you ever read The English Gentleman? No? Oh, I think you'd really like it." Then, later, curious about my strange recommendation, he'll look it up online and discover it's a book about manners. A great passive-aggressive way to deal with rude people. And if the insult is over his head, he might buy that terrible book and waste his time reading it, too.
