Book It

During elementary school our teachers would reward us with a gift certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut whenever we finished a book. It was part of the Book It rewards program, and Pizza Hut would sponsor these monthly reading contests. I shudder at the thought of rewarding reading with awful food, but hey, it got kids reading. I hope my principal was also getting some kind of kickback from the Pizza Hut corporation for sending scores of families to their restaurants every night. More recently one of my friends became a teacher in a neighboring district, and I found out they're still running the Pizza Hut Book It system. He has a notepad of the gift certificates for free personal pan pizzas, and when I think about it, I can't help but imagine it as a doctor's prescription pad. Next time I see him I'm going to steal his pad of gift certificates and go to Pizza Hut and demand back pay on all the books I've read since elementary school.

  1. Hahaha, oh the Book It program. Maybe that's why I like to read so much now, or maybe that's why I associate pizza with being rewarded....
