My first job as a bike mechanic was to remove the handbrake from my scooter and mount it on my BMX bike. I was in about second grade. I botched the job, though I did learn how cable housing works. The end result was that I had to stop my scooter by jumping off of it into the gravel, and I still had to stop my BMX bike using the coaster brake. After that one job, my parents never wanted me working on the family bikes. In high school I worked in a bike shop, and it was only after about five years there that they let me anywhere near the family bikes again. I don't know what the big deal was, it's not like they were the ones jumping off their bikes into the gravel to stop.
