Common Experience

I was out of town for a week, and I missed a hurricane and an earthquake. It was a good week to be away. When I was gone over the winter I missed a massive snowstorm that shutdown airports for days. If the next time I go on a vacation a tsunami washes over the city, then I'll know there's some cosmic connection. The thing is, when the massive weather events happen, everyone has some funny story to share of their experience. And by being here and living through it, you become part of a community with a shared past. That's why a few years from now, I'll mention something off-hand about how, "This reminds of when we stocked up for the hurricane -- you remember that?" In doing so, I will reinsert myself into peoples' memories of the event and become more of a part of the community. Also, this will serve as an alibi if I'm ever accused of causing natural disasters by leaving town.
