I've never been a morning person. I prefer to stay up late at night and sleep until the sun's been up for a few hours. And I've never really been envious of morning people, though I have to admit that from time to time I've wondered what it's like to live on the other side. I found out when I went to Hawaii. I'd fall asleep wherever I found myself at 8pm, and then I'd wake up at 5am every day. In the morning I'd wander around the beach or the hotel enjoying the coolness and the soft breeze off the ocean, only a few elderly power walkers sharing the relative solitude of the time and place. Then as the week went on, bedtimes drifted back and wake-ups followed. Once again I found myself among the strange musicians of the night, service industry professionals, and anyone who didn't have to wake up early the next day, and of course those who found themselves out celebrating or commiserating longer than they'd anticipated. These night people, they're the good time crew. The ones who think the next best thing is coming, if they can just stay up a little bit later, maybe the time of their life will walk through the doors. You know, my people.
